Name: Janine Wright
Title/Subject Area: Mathematics Teacher, 7-12.
Career Background: Before studying Mathematics and Science at university, I was a tennis player, winning three state tennis titles, two against Evonne Goolagong who went on to win Wimbledon. I then had a variety of experiences teaching in schools from Sydney to outback Queensland before coming to Summerland where I have taught Mathematics for the past 18 years.
My Teaching Approach/Style: I enjoy getting to know each student individually and helping them to achieve in Mathematics to the best of their ability. I care about each student I teach and hope to be able to communicate this to them so that they feel supported in their learning and in their lives generally.
I Love (about Summerland): I love working at Summerland as staff, parents and students care for and support one another.
For Fun - Teacher Inspiration: My own High School teacher was a great role-model and really helped me to develop a love of problem-solving.
I also love this quote by Salman Khan and use it to encourage my students.
“..the brain is like a muscle; the more you use it, the more it grows. Neural connections form and deepen most when we make mistakes doing difficult tasks rather than repeatedly having success with easy ones. This means that our intelligence is not fixed, and the best way we can grow our intelligence is to embrace tasks where we might struggle and fail.”
