As part of our History and Geography unit, Year 3 has been learning about the different types of farms in the Northern Rivers and how our food is processed from the ‘Paddock to our Plates’.

On Thursday last week, 3B and 3J had an invaluable opportunity to listen to a special guest speaker, Phillip McCaughey, share his knowledge of the cattle industry.

Phil is a director of a local cattle processing company and has strong family ties to the farming and production aspects of the beef industry.

We learnt about the different breeds of cattle; and Phil’s preference for a cross between a Brahman and an Angus, known as a ‘Brangus’.  He discussed the increasing importance of the farming industry in the 21st Century, due to the growing global population and demand for quality beef products. Phil also enlightened us about sustainable farming practices and taking care of the animals and the environment.

Maria Mitchell reflected on the morning and said “Phil was funny and very kind. I learnt a lot! I enjoyed it very much!” . This sentiment was echoed by many students.

Thank you for coming and sharing your knowledge and experiences with us, Phil! We had a great morning.
